Meaning - Why Are We Here?

Purpose is not self-invented. We are made to glorify God, enjoy Him, and participate in His restoring work.

Flourishing in God’s Story

What to Remember Today:

Purpose is not self-invented. We are made to glorify God, enjoy Him, and participate in His restoring work.

Today’s Word

Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

— Ecclesiastes 12:13 (ESV)

Opening Story

A grief counselor works with families who have lost loved ones. Over and over, she notices that those who anchor their hope in temporary pleasures struggle to find peace, while those who trust in God’s greater purposes discover a deeper steadiness. Meaning is not found by avoiding pain. It is found by belonging to a story larger than the pain.

Devotional Reflection

  1. Meaning Cannot Be Manufactured Forever

    • Human beings can distract themselves for a long time, but they cannot live indefinitely on borrowed purpose. Pleasure, achievement, and self-invention eventually crack under the weight they were never meant to bear.
  2. Purpose Is Received Before It Is Chosen

    • God created us for relationship and worship (John 17:3 ESV). Jesus invites us into His mission, to “seek first the kingdom” (Matthew 6:33 ESV), so that every task, joy, and trial can be gathered back under His glory.
  3. Meaning Shows Up in Ordinary Faithfulness

    • In your daily routines, work, family, service, ask: “How does this moment let me glorify God and love others?” Purpose is not found only in dramatic calling. It is practiced in ordinary obedience.

Socratic Prompt:

“What have I been asking to give my life meaning that was never meant to carry that weight? What would it mean to receive purpose from God instead?”

Wordsmith Corner

  • Teleology: The study of purpose or goal-directedness in nature and human life.

In Today’s World

  • “Self-actualization” often becomes an idol, driving people to chase success, comfort, or self-expression as if those could finally answer the soul. Lasting joy comes from surrendering self to God’s story and serving a purpose beyond personal advancement.

Counterfeit Versions

Shadow PursuitPurpose Under Christ
Self-Actualization: Find your own purpose.Christ-Centered Calling: Our purpose flows from union with Christ and His mission.
Pleasure-Driven Meaning: Do what feels fulfilling.Vocation as Worship: Joy is deepened, not diminished, when life is ordered toward God.
Legacy-Building: Make your name matter.Faithful Presence: Fruitfulness matters more than self-importance.

Prayer Prompt

“Father, forgive me for searching for meaning in places that cannot hold it. Reorder my desires so that I want Your kingdom more than self-importance, comfort, or applause. Teach me to receive purpose as gift and to live it out in ordinary faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Spiritual Exercise

  1. Meaning Inventory
    • List the three places you most often look for significance: achievement, romance, usefulness, recognition, control, comfort, or something else. Beside each one, write what it promises and what it actually produces in you.
  2. Ordinary Calling Practice
    • Choose one routine task today, answering email, cleaning, caregiving, commuting, and do it as an act of worship. Before you begin, pray: “Let this small thing belong to You.”

For Deeper Digging

  • Group Discussion:
    1. Why do comfort and self-expression feel so persuasive as substitutes for purpose?
    2. How can a community help one another see ordinary faithfulness as meaningful?
